Key Fetal Developments

During the fifth month, your baby undergoes important growth:

  • Week 17: The baby is about the size of an avocado (around 13 cm). The skeleton continues to harden, and the baby may start to move, though you might not feel it yet.

  • Week 18: The baby’s ears are more developed, and it can hear sounds from outside the womb, including your voice.

  • Week 19: The baby is now around 15–16 cm long. The skin becomes more opaque, and fine hair (lanugo) begins to cover the body.

  • Week 20: Your baby is about the size of a banana (around 25 cm). This is the halfway mark, and you may start to feel the first fluttering movements, called “quickening.”

Symptoms for New Mothers

At this stage, pregnancy symptoms may evolve:

  • Visible Baby Bump: Your belly is likely becoming noticeable, marking a clear stage of pregnancy.

  • Increased Appetite: Your body’s caloric needs increase, so you may feel hungrier.

  • Backache and Joint Pain: As your baby grows, you may experience more strain on your back and pelvis.

  • Skin Changes: Some women experience “the pregnancy glow,” while others may have darker pigmentation or stretch marks.

A new baby is like the beginning of all things – wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities

Doctor Visit Expectations

Routine visits focus on monitoring fetal growth and the mother’s health:

    • Anatomy Scan (20 Weeks Ultrasound): This detailed scan checks for major physical abnormalities and measures the baby’s organs, limbs, and overall growth.

    • Blood Tests: If you haven’t already, your doctor may run additional blood tests to screen for gestational diabetes or anemia.

    • Fetal Heartbeat: The doctor may listen for the baby’s heartbeat and ensure everything is progressing well.
