Key Fetal Developments

The baby continues to develop rapidly in the sixth month:

  • Week 21: The baby is around 26–27 cm long and weighs about 300 grams. The baby’s skin starts to become more opaque, and the body starts storing fat beneath the skin.

  • Week 22: The baby’s sense of touch becomes more developed. You may feel strong movements as the baby begins to stretch and kick more.

  • Week 23: The baby’s lungs continue to develop, and although it’s still too early for breathing on its own, it practices breathing movements.

  • Week 24: The baby’s nervous system is maturing. By now, the baby weighs about 600 grams, and the face is more defined, with eyebrows, eyelashes, and eyelids.

Symptoms for New Mothers

Expect some changes in how you feel:

  • Frequent Urination: As the baby grows, it puts pressure on your bladder, which may make you need to urinate more frequently.

  • Leg Cramps: Some women experience cramping in the legs due to the growing weight of the uterus.

  • Increased Fatigue: Although your energy might return in the second trimester, some women start feeling tired again in the sixth month.

  • Swollen Feet and Ankles: This is common as the body retains more fluid during pregnancy.

A new baby is like the beginning of all things – wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities

Doctor Visit Expectations

The doctor will check on both your health and your baby’s:

  • Fetal Heartbeat Check: Regular monitoring of the baby’s heartbeat to assess growth.

  • Gestational Diabetes Test: Between 24 and 28 weeks, a blood test for gestational diabetes will be recommended.

  • Blood Pressure Check: Monitoring for signs of pregnancy-related complications such as preeclampsia.
