Weeks 29 To 32 of pregnancy

Key Fetal Developments

Your baby is now nearing full development:

  • Week 29: The baby is now about 38 cm long and weighs 1.2–1.3 kg. The baby’s lungs are continuing to mature.

  • Week 30: The baby’s eyes can now open and close. Fat deposits continue to build up under the skin to help with temperature regulation after birth.

  • Week 31: The baby’s bones are fully developed, though still soft. The baby begins to position itself for birth, with many babies starting to move into the head-down position.

  • Week 32: The baby’s body is nearly fully developed. It now weighs about 1.7 kg, and the skin becomes more smooth and pink.

Symptoms for New Mothers

Expect even more physical changes in the eighth month:

  • Increased Belly Size: Your baby is now large enough that your belly is noticeably rounder and more uncomfortable.

  • Swelling: Many women experience swelling in their feet, ankles, and hands.

  • Fatigue: Even though you may be close to the end, many women start feeling more tired again as the body prepares for labor.

  • Frequent Urination: The baby’s increased size puts more pressure on your bladder, causing you to use the bathroom more frequently.

Sometimes you don’t realize what is missing in your life until it arrives

Doctor Visit Expectations

These visits are critical for monitoring your and your baby’s health:

  • Labor Preparation: Your doctor will discuss your birth plan, pain management options, and any complications that might arise.

  • Monitoring Baby’s Position: Your doctor will check if the baby is head-down, as this is important for a vaginal birth.

  • Group B Strep Test: At 35-37 weeks, a vaginal and rectal swab test is performed to check for Group B strep, which can affect the baby if left untreated during delivery.
